Mozart was an avid dancer from an early age, composing pantomimes and masquerades in which he himself participated, with a professional ballet master setting the steps. He even took classes with the famed dancer, Vestris, when he was in Paris where he wrote his ballet “Les Petits Riens”. Mozart was very involved in the setting of the dances for his operas. I have had the unique opportunity to spend more of my career exploring Lucio Silla than any other opera in Opera Atelier’s repertoire. This is due to the extraordinary generosity of conductor Marc Minkowski, who invited Jeannette and me to stage and choreograph the opera, initially in Salzburg.
We were given the luxury of an eight-week rehearsal period plus multiple trips to Paris to coach tenor Rolando Villazón (in the title role), mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa, and to confer with the production and design team. Rehearsals were exceptionally focused and intense with an equal emphasis placed on text and music.
